ALMAGUIN HANGAR RESORT

In the center of the Almaguin Highlands region in Northern Ontario is an abandoned airport hangar, which is gradually being reclaimed by the surrounding woodlands. Drawing inspiration from the region's history of forestry and tourism, this adaptive reuse design project proposes re-imagining the space as a mixed-use resort, giving visitors an authentic experience of the region. The contemporary interior and architectural design elements, such as the various wooden skins used to encapsulate the re-purposed hangar and surrounding private cabins, allow the buildings to blend into the surroundings. Dramatic, curated views of the landscape are framed for the visitor through the use of large windows and exterior hangar doors, inviting visitors to experience the environment, while simultaneously being surrounded by a contemporary interior space designed to reflect the region's past and future.
